About AI Tool Compare

Started on Reddit, now live here. AI Tool Compare began as the subreddit r/aitoolcompare and grew into an independent comparison and research site.

Sebastiaan Smits

Founder and editor, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Sebastiaan Smits started r/aitoolcompare as a place to ask which AI tool is worth paying for, then built this site from the questions that came up there. He is editorially responsible for every ranking, comparison and statistic on it. Research and drafting are AI-assisted; every price, limit and figure is checked against a source page before it is published. He also owns 2 Steps Ahead, an AI search visibility agency that helps B2B software companies get named in AI answers.

How it started

The same question kept coming up: which AI tool is actually worth paying for? Sebastiaan Smits started r/aitoolcompare as a place to ask it and compare notes. The recurring threads (which chatbot, which coding assistant, which meeting recorder) became the first rankings here, and the questions people asked became the FAQ on each page. The subreddit is still where the discussion happens, and the feed on the homepage shows it live.

What is published here

Ranked buyer's guides per AI category, alternatives and head-to-head pages for the tools people ask about most, sourced statistics, and market data computed from Eurostat's enterprise AI survey. The site grows slowly on purpose: a new page is added only when its figures can be checked against a source page.

Who is responsible

Sebastiaan Smits is editorially responsible for every page. Research and drafting are AI-assisted, and that is stated here rather than hidden. Each price, limit and statistic is checked against the vendor's or publisher's own page before publication, and corrections are listed on the methodology page.
