Claude: what it is, what it costs, where it breaks
Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic that reads long documents, drafts and edits text, analyzes files and writes code in conversation, available through web, desktop and mobile apps and an API, sold as free, subscription and team plans.
What to know first
Claude is Anthropic's own chat product, sold alongside an API and the Claude Code coding tool. The plan ladder is easy to read: free, Pro at $20 billed monthly, Max from $100, and seat-based Team and Enterprise. The thing to understand first is that usage is metered in rolling five-hour windows with weekly limits on top, shared with Claude Code, and that consumer data terms hinge on a training setting you choose.

Who Claude is best for
Writers, analysts and researchers
Long uploads, projects that hold reference files and a prose style reviewers often call less formulaic make it a common choice for drafting and for reading lengthy reports.
Developers using Claude Code
Pro and Max include Claude Code with shared limits, so one subscription covers both chat and terminal-based coding work without separate billing.
Teams that need no-training terms by default
Team and Enterprise are excluded from model training by default, and Team starts at a $20 standard seat when billed annually.

What Claude does
- Projects and artifacts
- Projects keep reference files and instructions together, and artifacts produce documents, code and interactive pages next to the chat so edits happen in a side panel.
- Claude Code on paid plans
- Pro and Max include Claude Code. Usage is shared with the chat app, so heavy coding sessions reduce what is left for ordinary conversations during the same window.
- Memory and connectors
- Free accounts include memory and app connectors, while Pro adds Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365 integration for working inside browser tabs and office files.
- Incognito chats
- Incognito conversations are not used for model improvement even when the setting is on, a useful switch for one-off sensitive questions on a personal plan.
How Claude handles your data
For Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic uses chats for training only if the Model Improvement setting is on, you opt in elsewhere, or a conversation is flagged for safety review. With the setting on, de-identified data can be kept up to five years, versus 30 days otherwise. Incognito chats are excluded and deleted chats leave back-end storage within 30 days. Team, Enterprise and the API are excluded from training by default. Anthropic states data is stored in the US, with traffic that may route to select countries in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Where Claude falls short in practice
- Five-hour and weekly caps. Pro has a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit across models, and message counts depend on message length, files and the model used. Anthropic can add other limits to manage capacity.
- Shared allowance with Claude Code. Chat and Claude Code draw from the same limits, so a long coding run can leave little for conversations later in the day. Credits are sold to continue after limits.
- No EU-only storage on consumer plans. Anthropic says data is stored in the US. EU-only inference is available through cloud providers such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI rather than the consumer app.

Claude: common questions
How much does Claude cost in 2026?
As of October 2026 Claude is free, Pro is $20 per month billed monthly or $17 per month billed annually, and Max starts at $100 per month for 5x Pro usage or $200 for 20x. Team standard seats are $20 per seat billed annually, and Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage at API rates.
Does Claude train on my chats?
On Free, Pro and Max, only if the Model Improvement setting is on, you opt in another way, or a chat is flagged for safety review. Incognito chats are excluded. Team, Enterprise and the API are excluded by default. Feedback you submit with the thumbs buttons can be kept for up to five years.
What happens when I hit Claude's usage limit?
You wait for the five-hour window to reset, or on paid plans you can continue on usage credits billed pay-as-you-go once a session or weekly limit is fully used. Pro also has a weekly limit shown in Settings, under Usage, with the next reset time displayed.
Is Claude available with data stored in the EU?
Not on the consumer apps. Anthropic's privacy page says data is stored in the US, with traffic that may be routed through select regions. Organizations that need EU processing can use Claude through cloud providers such as Amazon Bedrock EU profiles or Google Vertex AI regional endpoints.
Is Claude Pro worth it over the Free plan?
Pro gives at least five times the usage per five-hour window, plus Claude Code, Research and additional models, so it pays off once you hit the Free cap in a normal working day. Occasional users who ask a few questions a day can stay on Free without losing core features.
