Runway: what it is, what it costs, where it breaks
Runway is a generative media platform made by Runway AI, Inc. that creates video, images and audio from text and reference footage in a browser workspace and mobile apps. It sells credit-based subscriptions for individuals and teams, and a separate developer API.
What to know first
Runway bills in credits, and each model has its own price per second or per image, so the real cost of a plan depends on which engine you pick. Standard, Pro and Max differ mainly in credit volume, parallel jobs, storage and which premium models are unlimited. Unused credits reset monthly except on Max, and purchased top-ups do not expire. The terms of use allow Runway to train on inputs and outputs.

Who Runway is best for
Solo creators testing several video engines
Standard at $15 per month gives access to all image and video models with no watermarks, so one subscription covers a side-by-side trial of different engines before committing elsewhere.
Editors who need 4K delivery
Pro and Max list unlimited 4K video upscaling, which suits people who generate in lower resolution to save credits and upscale only the takes they keep.
Teams that automate with other software
Pro and Max list Runway MCP access, and a separate API product exists, so generation can be called from an assistant or a pipeline instead of the web editor.
High-volume freelancers
Max at $95 per month includes 9,500 credits, up to 20 parallel generations and 500GB of storage, which fits someone producing clips daily.

What Runway does
- Per-model credit pricing
- The pricing page lists a credit cost for each generation: Gen-4.5 at 60 credits per 5 seconds, Aleph 2.0 at 140 credits per 5 seconds, and Seedance 2.0 Fast at 116 credits per 4 seconds. Picking the engine decides the bill.
- Agentic creative collaborator
- Every paid plan includes an agent that Runway describes as a creative collaborator. It is meant to plan and run generation steps for you in the workspace rather than only responding to single prompts.
- Audio generation
- Credits also pay for sound. The pricing page lists text to speech at 1 credit per 50 characters and song generation with Lyria 3 models, so narration and music can be made in the same workspace as the footage.
- Brand Kits and voice clones
- Pro adds one Brand Kit and one custom voice clone, and Max raises both to three. These keep a recurring look and narrator consistent across projects instead of re-uploading references each time.
- Studio-grade output
- Max lists HDR, ProRes and image-sequence generations. Those formats matter to colorists and compositors who need footage that holds up in a post-production pipeline, not just a web-ready MP4.
How Runway handles your data
Runway's terms of use say the company does not claim ownership of your inputs or outputs and does not restrict commercial use of outputs, subject to compliance with the agreement. The same section says inputs and outputs may be used to train and improve its models, including for labeling and content moderation, and you grant a perpetual license to that effect. Runway also reserves the right to review inputs and outputs. The terms state it has no obligation to store your content. Runway lists a separate Enterprise data security page, which was not checked for this page, so enterprise exceptions are unverified.
Where Runway falls short in practice
- Spending is hard to predict. Cost per clip swings with the engine: Aleph 2.0 at 140 credits per 5 seconds uses more than twice what Gen-4.5 uses at 60. A budget built on one model breaks when you switch.
- Credits reset on lower tiers. On Standard and Pro, monthly credits do not roll over and reset within 24 hours of the billing date. Only Max carries a month forward, so a slow month is wasted money.
- Some unlimited offers are temporary. The pricing page marks unlimited Wan 3.0 in Tool Mode on Max as available until October 18. Plans that look generous on the page can change within days.
- Content may not be kept for you. The terms say Runway has no obligation to store your content and is not liable for its deletion. Keep your own copies of every approved clip outside the workspace.

Runway: common questions
How many credits does a Runway video use?
It depends on the model. As of October 2026 the pricing page lists Gen-4.5 at 60 credits for 5 seconds, Aleph 2.0 at 140 credits for 5 seconds and Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p at 160 credits for 4 seconds. The FAQ gives Gen-4.5 as 12 credits per second.
Is Runway cheaper if I pay yearly?
Yes. Yearly billing is listed at 20 percent off: Standard drops from $15 to $12 per month, Pro from $35 to $28 and Max from $95 to $76. The page states the annual saving as $36, $84 and $228 per year respectively.
What happens to unused Runway credits?
On Standard and Pro they reset within 24 hours of your billing date and do not roll over. Max carries up to one month of unused credits forward. Credits bought separately, with a 1,000-credit minimum purchase, never expire, and the free plan's 125 credits also do not expire.
Can Runway use my uploaded footage to train its models?
The terms of use say inputs and outputs may be used to train and improve Runway's AI models, and you grant a perpetual license for that. The terms do not describe an opt-out for self-serve plans. Enterprise arrangements may differ, and that was not checked here.
Do I need a paid Runway plan for commercial use?
The terms say Runway does not restrict commercial use of outputs if you follow the agreement, and they do not tie that right to a plan. Standard removes watermarks, which is what makes clips deliverable. The free plan's watermark policy is not stated on the pricing page.
