AI chat assistants: what they are and who makes them
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and 6 more, sorted into types, with the company behind each and where it is based.
Types of AI chat assistants
General-purpose assistants
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok try to handle any request, from drafting an email to analyzing a spreadsheet to debugging a script. They differ mostly in tone, usage caps, bundled extras and how each vendor treats your conversations, which is where a buyer should spend the comparison time.
Answer engines
Perplexity puts live web search first and attaches sources to each answer. These products suit research and fact-checking, where a cited, current answer matters more than a long creative or analytical conversation, and where you plan to click through to the original page.
Suite-embedded assistants
Microsoft Copilot and Gemini inside Google Workspace sit within the office software a company already pays for. Their strength is access to your mail, files and calendar, and the admin controls your IT team already runs. They are weaker as a neutral, stand-alone chat window for people outside that suite.
Regional and open-weight vendors
Mistral Vibe comes from a French company, while DeepSeek publishes open-weight models from China. These products matter when the vendor's home jurisdiction, hosting options or ability to self-host decide whether a tool is allowed at all, ahead of any comparison of answer quality.
